About the city
Recife sits across three islands at the confluence of the Capibaribe and Beberibe rivers, just before they meet the South Atlantic. With 1,488,920 inhabitants according to the 2022 census and a metropolitan region exceeding 3.7 million, it is the ninth most populous city in Brazil and the third largest in the Northeast. Its more than 50 bridges have earned it the nickname Venice of Brazil.
Founded in 1537 as a fishing port serving Olinda, Recife acquired its definitive urban layout under the Dutch administration of Johan Maurits van Nassau (1637–1654), who provided it with canals, bridges, and infrastructure that still define its character today. Olinda, a neighbouring city declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, preserves more than 20 Baroque churches. Recife's Carnival is sustained by two traditions of its own: frevo, an acrobatic umbrella dance declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and maracatu, a percussive procession with African, Portuguese, and indigenous roots. The Marco Zero, in the Praça Rio Branco in the Recife Antigo neighbourhood, marks the city's geographic point of origin and kilometre zero of Pernambuco.
Recife's sporting passion centres on the Três Grandes de Pernambuco: Sport Club do Recife (founded 1905, Copa do Brasil champions in 2008, 45 state titles), Santa Cruz, and Náutico. The Arena Pernambuco, with 46,000 seats upholstered in red as a tribute to all three clubs, hosted four matches during the 2014 World Cup. The Recife Half Marathon, starting from the Cais da Alfândega, draws around 4,500 runners in its 2026 edition, while the coast of Porto de Galinhas, 60 km to the south, hosts national and international surfing championships at Maracaípe beach.
Recife features in the ACES Activa network as part of the community of participating Brazilian cities. In 2016, ACES Europe participated as a jury member in the Cidades do Esporte programme, an initiative that assessed the sports policies of the 12 Brazilian host cities of the 2014 World Cup, including Recife.
