About the city

Reggio Calabria is the largest city in Calabria, at the tip of the Italian boot, facing the Strait of Messina, the arm of sea that separates the peninsula from Sicily. With more than 180,000 inhabitants, it has a long seafront promenade facing the strait — famous for its views of Sicily's Etna — and houses in its museum the Riace Bronzes, two of the most important Greek sculptures in the world. Its seafront and Mediterranean climate link it to water and outdoor sports. Reggio Calabria was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2013, a title that places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
