About the territory

The Eastern Region (Reġjun Lvant) is one of the administrative regions of Malta, created by Act No. XIV of 2019 and in operation since 2022. It is not a city but a regional council that brings together twelve local councils on the island of Malta: Birkirkara, Għargħur, Gżira, Iklin, Lija, Msida, Pembroke, Pietà, San Ġiljan, Sliema, Swieqi and Ta' Xbiex, with around 116,000 inhabitants according to the 2021 census. Its seat is in San Ġwann, a locality that is not part of the region. The Eastern Region was recognised by ACES Europe as European Region of Sport 2023; in December of that year it held the closing ceremony of the title, with the participation of its local councils and the sports clubs of the territory. The recognition places it within the Maltese representation in the ACES network.
