About the city
Salò is a town in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy, located on the shores of Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy, in a sheltered bay of the western shore. With just over 10,000 inhabitants, it is an elegant lakeside tourist destination, with a long waterfront promenade and a historic centre of medieval and Venetian origin. It gives its name to the 'Republic of Salò', the state of the final period of the Second World War. Its lake favours water sports, especially sailing. Salò was recognised by ACES Europe as European Town of Sport 2012, a title reserved for municipalities of fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, which places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
