About the city

Samborondón is a canton in Ecuador's Guayas province, part of the Guayaquil metropolitan area, that lives split between two realities. On one side, the historic cantonal seat on the banks of the Babahoyo River, riverine and rural in character; on the other, La Puntilla and its urban surroundings, one of the most prosperous and planned residential areas in Ecuador, with universities, shopping centres and high-income developments. That duality shows in the figures: the canton grew from 67,590 inhabitants in 2010 to 98,540 in the 2022 census —a rise of nearly 46% in a decade—, with most concentrated in the urban zone and a markedly young population, around 54% under 30.

Sport is an identity policy for the municipality. According to the city council's own data, the Municipal Sports Schools programme grew from 8 sites in 2019 to about twenty, with more than 6,000 active athletes across more than ten disciplines and over 16,000 people served since then —the latter figure also cited in the official title announcement—. Public activity is anchored on the Malecón de Samborondón, with sports areas, a civic plaza and a bike lane, and the canton has stepped up to hosting major events: in May 2025 it staged the Pan American Race Walking Cup.

On 12 December 2024, Samborondón received the American City of Sport 2025 title, becoming the first city in Ecuador to earn it. The bid rested on more than 16,000 beneficiaries of its programmes and over fifty sporting spaces. The recognition places Samborondón among the first Ecuadorian cities in the ACES América network —alongside Manta and Portoviejo, also honoured in 2025—, anticipating Guayaquil's designation as American Capital of Sport 2026, and grants access to a global network of thousands of cities.
