About the city
Sansepolcro is a town in the province of Arezzo, in Tuscany, located in the upper Tiber valley, near the borders with Umbria and the Marche, in the east of the region. With just over 12,000 inhabitants, it is famous for being the birthplace of the Renaissance painter Piero della Francesca, whose masterpieces it preserves, and for its tradition of the Palio della Balestra, a historic crossbow tournament. Its setting of valley and hills favours hiking and cycling. Sansepolcro was recognised by ACES Europe as European Town of Sport 2021, a title reserved for municipalities of fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, which places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
