About the city

Santo André is the largest city in the Grande ABC region, in the metropolitan area of São Paulo. With 748,919 inhabitants according to the 2022 census, it extends across 175 km² to the southeast of the state capital. Its identity is shaped by an industrial heritage that made it — together with São Bernardo do Campo and São Caetano do Sul — the heart of the largest manufacturing corridor in South America.

Santo André's origins date back to 1553, when João Ramalho founded the settlement of Santo André da Borda do Campo, one of the earliest Portuguese settlements in Brazil. The modern city grew from 1867 onwards with the inauguration of the Santos–Jundiaí railway, which attracted European immigrants and small industries. From the 1950s, the ABC region received massive investment in automotive, metallurgical, and chemical industries. Between 1978 and 1980, the cycle of metalworkers' strikes in the ABC — with 200,000 workers stopping production — marked the birth of the new Brazilian trade unionism and catalysed the founding of the Partido dos Trabalhadores. The Vila Ferroviária de Paranapiacaba, a Victorian English village built from the 1860s to house railway workers, has been protected by IPHAN since 2008 and is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status.

Esporte Clube Santo André, founded in 1967 and known as Ramalhão, produced one of the most memorable feats in Brazilian football history when they won the Copa do Brasil 2004, defeating Flamengo 2–0 in the final held at Maracanã. The Parque Natural Municipal do Pedroso, with 842 hectares of Atlantic Forest — five times the area of Parque Ibirapuera — is the city's main outdoor recreation space, with trails, sports courts, and 33 natural springs. The Secretaria de Esporte manages free programmes including sports academies, adult gymnastics, and guided walks.

Santo André was recognised as South American City of Sport 2022 by ACES Europe, a title presented in Turin in March 2022. This distinction, backed by the European Union and UNESCO, positions the city as a sporting reference for the ABC Paulista region within the ACES network.
