Saronno is a city in the province of Varese, in Lombardy, located north-west of Milan, an important communications hub between the Lombard capital and the lakes. With some 38,000 inhabitants, it is an industrial and service centre, famous for its tradition of liqueurs and confectionery — amaretto and amaretti biscuits bear its name — and for the sanctuary of the Beata Vergine dei Miracoli, with notable Renaissance frescoes. Saronno was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2016, a title that places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
