Its name refers to the river Rubicon, the famous watercourse that Julius Caesar crossed in 49 BC defying the Roman Senate, origin of the expression 'crossing the Rubicon'. With just over 17,000 inhabitants, it is a municipality of the Romagna interior with an agricultural and industrial tradition. Savignano sul Rubicone was recognised by ACES Europe as European Town of Sport 2012, a title reserved for municipalities of fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, which places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
