Sesto Calende is a town in the province of Varese, in Lombardy, located at the southern tip of Lake Maggiore, at the point where the river Ticino leaves the lake. With just over 8,000 inhabitants, it is a gateway to Lake Maggiore and its tourist area, in a natural setting between the water and the pre-Alpine hills. Its lakeside and river location favours water sports and cycling. Sesto Calende was recognised by ACES Europe as European Town of Sport 2019, a title reserved for municipalities of fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, which places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
