About the city
Siena is a city in Tuscany, capital of its province, located in the heart of the region, on the hills of central Tuscany. It preserves one of the most splendid medieval historic centres in Italy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, arranged around the Piazza del Campo, the famous shell-shaped square. It is world-famous for the Palio, the horse race between the city's contrade held twice a year. With almost 54,000 inhabitants, its setting of hills favours cycling and hiking.
