About the city
Stuttgart, capital of the state of Baden-Württemberg and industrial heart of southern Germany, was the European Capital of Sport 2007. Cradle of the car industry — home of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche — the city has a sporting life to match its economic weight: VfB Stuttgart fills the Mercedes-Benz Arena, and the city hosts top-level international events such as the women's Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and gymnastics and athletics competitions. At the end of its year as sporting capital, Stuttgart handed the commemorative plaque to Warsaw.
