About the city

Tegucigalpa, capital of Honduras and seat of the Distrito Central, is the country's largest city and its main political, economic, and cultural centre. With more than 1.3 million inhabitants, it spreads across the hills and mountains of the Department of Francisco Morazán, at an altitude of 1,000 metres, in the heart of Central America. The city houses the National Congress, the Supreme Court of Justice, and the country's leading universities, constituting Honduras's administrative and institutional axis.

As the first Central American capital with an active and documented participation in the ACES Activa programme, Tegucigalpa represents a milestone for the expansion of the citizen sport ecosystem in the region. With 780 registered participants, the city demonstrates that even in contexts of high urban complexity it is possible to drive health and physical activity policies with institutional reach. Its membership of the ACES ecosystem opens the door to new cities in the region seeking international recognition in sport and wellbeing.
