About the city
Terni is a city in Umbria, capital of its province, located in the south of the region, in the plain of the river Nera. With more than 111,000 inhabitants, it is an important industrial centre — known as the 'Italian Manchester' for its steel industry — developed thanks to the energy of the nearby Marmore Falls, a spectacular man-made waterfall of Roman origin, one of the tallest in Europe. Its setting, between industry and the nature of the Nera gorges, favours hiking and outdoor sports. Terni was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2021, a title that places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
