About the city

Tilburg is a city in the province of North Brabant, in the south of the Netherlands, the second-largest in the province after Eindhoven and the seventh-largest in the country, with more than 220,000 inhabitants. For centuries it was the wool capital of the Netherlands, with 145 wool mills in 1881, an industry that collapsed in the 1960s and gave way to logistics; the Trappist brewery of Koningshoeven Abbey, founded in 1884, is part of its identity. Its football club, Willem II, founded in 1896, has been national champion three times (1916, 1952 and 1955) and plays at the Koning Willem II Stadion. The city stages the Tilburg Ten Miles road race every year and hosted the 2018 European Cross Country Championships. Tilburg was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2016, a title that places it within the Dutch representation of the ACES network.
