About the city
Trujillo is a municipality in central Valle del Cauca nicknamed 'El jardín del Valle' (The Garden of the Valley) for its lush mountain landscapes filled with fruit and flowers. Founded as Vernaza in 1924 and renamed in honour of President Julián Trujillo, the municipality also carries a painful history: the Trujillo Massacre (1988–1991), in which paramilitaries and the Cali cartel killed over 245 people. The Monument to Human Rights erected in its urban centre is now a place of memory, resistance and hope that attracts visitors committed to reconciliation.
