About the city
Veľký Šariš is a small town in the Prešov Region, in eastern Slovakia, set on the river Torysa 6 kilometres north-north-west of Prešov. First mentioned in writing in 1217, it was a royal town before passing to feudal lords in 1465, and above it stand the ruins of Šariš Castle, reconstructed in recent years and now a setting for music and film festivals. It is known for the Šariš brewery, built in 1964 and described as the largest in Slovakia. With around 7,000 inhabitants, it has a football club, FC Pivovar Veľký Šariš, founded in 1919. Veľký Šariš was recognised by ACES Europe as European Town of Sport 2021, a title reserved for municipalities of fewer than 25,000 inhabitants that places it within the Slovak representation of the ACES network.
