About the city
Viana do Castelo is the capital of the homonymous district in the Alto Minho region, in northern Portugal, where the Lima river meets the Atlantic Ocean. With 85,778 inhabitants according to the 2021 census, the city is an enclave of singular natural and architectural beauty: its historic centre, presided over by the Basilica of Santa Luzia on the Franqueira hillside, and its Atlantic waterfront form one of the most distinctive urban landscapes in the northern Iberian Peninsula. The municipality's 88 sports clubs bring together more than 4,500 federated athletes and 10,000 non-federated practitioners across 50 disciplines.
In 2023, ACES Europe distinguished Viana do Castelo with the title of European City of Sport, also naming it the best European city of sport of that year among all award recipients. This distinction — the eleventh for a Portuguese city — rests on a solid track record of organising international events, including the 2024 ILCA 4 Youth World Championship and the 2026 Formula Kite World Championship. With 8 EWoS events registered in the ACES Activa system, Viana do Castelo is one of the most active European members of the ecosystem.
