About the city
Viseu is an inland city in central Portugal that blends its millennia-old historical heritage with a contemporary commitment to sport. Nestled in the heart of the Dão wine region at an altitude of 472 metres, the city preserves one of the country's finest historic centres, dominated by its Romanesque Cathedral and the Museu Grão Vasco, guardian of the most valuable Portuguese Renaissance paintings. Tradition links the city to the Lusitanian chieftain Viriathus and to the probable birthplace of Afonso Henriques, the founder of the Kingdom of Portugal.
Economically, Viseu serves as an undisputed regional hub: it hosts the headquarters of Visabeira Group, one of Portugal's most significant business conglomerates, and stands at the centre of the Dão Denominação de Origem Controlada, whose full-bodied red wines enjoy international recognition. Its higher education institutions further cement its role as a knowledge city for the whole region.
In 2024, ACES Europe honoured Viseu with the title of European City of Sport, the culmination of years of investment in facilities and sport-for-all programmes. The city offers athletics, swimming, team sports, and hiking infrastructure, and leads Portugal in the model of physical activity integrated into everyday civic life. Its prominent participation in the EWoS 2024 programme, with 35 registered events, is a precise reflection of that deeply rooted sports culture.
