About the city
Viterbo is the capital of its province, in northern Lazio, famous for preserving one of the best-kept medieval old towns in Italy, with the San Pellegrino quarter as its jewel and the Palace of the Popes, which was the papal seat in the 13th century. Known as the 'city of the Popes', with some 47,000 inhabitants, it is also famous for its thermal waters and for the Transport of the Machine of Santa Rosa, a tradition recognised by UNESCO. Its setting, in the volcanic area of the Cimini mountains and Lake Bolsena, favours outdoor activities. Viterbo was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2012, a title that places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
