About the city
Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon on the banks of the Ebro, will be the European Capital of Sport 2027. The title arrived after a historic final: its bid, "Zaragoza inspira deporte", ended in a near tie with Naples for the 2026 title, and ACES, following its own regulations, chose to recognise both cities — Naples in 2026 and Zaragoza in 2027. The mayor welcomed the extra year as an advantage: more time to have facilities ready. The project mobilises public and private investment valued at over 200 million euros, including the new sports centre at the La Almozara pools, the Southern District Sports Centre, the future Smart Sports City and fresh momentum for the new Romareda stadium. The title adds to a city also recognised with the European Commission's Access City Award 2026.
