The United States, which holds the presidency of the American Council of Sport, hosts for the first time the annual meeting of the 22 member countries of the Ibero-American Council of Sport
The Plan for the Creation of Sport Indicators, collaboration with bodies such as UNESCO, GIZ, CAF and the URJC, and the work on gender in sport are among the priorities of the Assembly
The Ibero-American Council of Sport will hold its thirtieth General Assembly in Washington, United States, on Thursday 25 April. This is the annual meeting of the 22 member countries of the CID, a gathering that also brings together the American Council of Sport (CADE), of which ACES is already a strategic ally, and the South American Council of Sport (CONSUDE).
The XXX Assembly of the CID thus marks a milestone, not only because it celebrates three decades of existence as an intergovernmental cooperation body in sporting matters, but also because it is being held in the United States for the first time. The choice is due to the fact that the North American country currently holds the presidency of CADE and will act as host of this year's Sport Summit.
Year after year, this meeting becomes a unique platform for the exchange of experiences, the definition of joint strategies and the promotion of projects between countries and organisations to foster the development of sport in the Ibero-American region.
On this occasion, the first under the presidency of Andrés Guschmer, Minister of Sport of Ecuador, the Assembly's working sessions will focus on projects such as the Sport for Development Indicators Plan; the Protocol against racism, xenophobia, violence and intolerance; and the initiatives on gender equality in sport, led by the Ibero-American Women and Sport Network (REDIMYD).
Likewise, the lines of work for 2024 and 2025 will be set out, the report on the CID's participation in the latest international summits (MINEPS and CIGEPS) will be presented, and the lines of work with collaborating organisations, such as UNESCO, GIZ, CAF, the IDB, the Rey Juan Carlos University of Madrid and the IOC, among others, will be presented.
ACES, through its institutional director in the Americas, Adriana Sánchez Parés, will present the results of the American Week of Sport 2023, which was a success in its first edition, with 13 participating countries, 40 cities that staged 340 events with more than two million citizens getting active during the AWoS period.
Likewise, she will present the AWoS 2024 plan for the information of the continent's ministers.
Adriana Sánchez Parés expressed her satisfaction with the results of the first edition, but pointed out that “we must now give a boost to the following editions with the firm support of the ministries in order to strengthen the visibility of this initiative that unites the entire continent through sport”.
During the Assembly, ACES and the CID will sign a strategic agreement for the support of all countries for the American Week, as well as with the aim of working on other lines of support for sport across the entire continent.
ACES, the organisation founded and chaired by Gian Francesco Lupattelli, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2024, is today the world's leading network of sporting cities, with more than 5,000 organisations, working with them to make sport a state policy of public institutions, with the aim of strengthening the role of sport as a catalyst for a great social and economic transformation.
From ACES AMERICA, its general coordinator, Gonzalo Cuesta, stated that “we continue to strengthen the role of ACES on the continent, not only in terms of the analysis of cities and regions regarding their strategic plans on sport policy, but also as an institutional actor that brings added value to the main political and sporting organisations of the American continent in order to make sport an essential line in the projects and policies of decision-makers”.
